Silk takes centre stage at London Fashion Week

The UK’s most prestigious international fashion event may have taken place in mostly digital form this year, but silk fabrics still shone during London Fashion Week.

Among the designers choosing silk for their Spring/Summer 2021 collections was Victoria Beckham, who appeared to have been inspired by the many delayed weddings we can expect to see next year. Her range of light and dreamy silk dresses with lace and keyhole details are sure to adorn the best-dressed wedding guests next summer.

With its soft draping and capacity to keep you cool in hot weather, designers consider silk to be both a practical and stylish choice for spring and summer dressing.

Having decided against a catwalk show for Covid-19 safety reasons, Victoria Beckham instead hosted small groups to view her collection and handed out a monogrammed silk face mask to each guest.

At the other end of the volume spectrum, Simone Rocha went big with her historically inspired outfits that had an Elizabethan vibe. Large, lavish silhouettes were created using lashings of silk, satin and metallic jacquard, with beautiful embroidery and beading adding a regal touch.

After launching at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Madrid, Accidental Cutting’s latest collection Apocalypse – the new reality was also digitally showcased at London Fashion Week.

The brand’s founder, Spanish fashion designer and architect Eva Iszoro, chose silk fabrics supplied by Pongees for this fascinating collection, which was created in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Inspired by the uncertain nature of the coronavirus and a feeling that the world order has fallen, Eva explored these concepts to create stunning designs that are both self-protective and futuristic. More conventional garments were also mixed into the show, with bluish green being a characteristic colour.

Many of the garments in the highly imaginative range were created using the Accidental Cutting experimental pattern cutting method.

At Pongees, we have always been proud to draw on our expertise to help fashion students and designers create show-stopping designs.
