Pongees has always prided itself on providing the same high level of service to anyone interested in buying silk fabrics – whether they are first year students, established couturiers or stars of the international catwalks.
In the 1930s, Pongees set up an office and showroom in the East End of London, colloquially know as the “rag trade” area as it was full of garment manufacturers and wholesalers selling fashion to stores and shops throughout the UK.
Over the years the area has changed and while still known for fashion, it is now the home of many independent, cutting edge designers, smaller manufacturing units and a number of leading fashion colleges. Pongees is unique in that it is the only specialist silk supplier with a showroom in the area and works hard to provide a comfortable space where buyers of fabric can see and feel the fantastic collection of quality silks.
For students ,in particular, a visit to the Pongees showroom is an education. Over the years, we have regularly hosted organised visits for groups of fashion students, who are given a masterclass on the production, history, care and use of silk. These have proved particularly popular and we’re working to continue this support with videos and virtual meetings.
Students also pop into the showroom to research fabrics for individual projects and particularly their final year collection – the most important of their course. Often they come to look at the whole collection and take away free swatches to develop their ideas before placing an order – or even taking advantage of our 1m minimum order to experiment. Pongees provides an invaluable service as we are always on hand to help steer upcoming designers as to the most appropriate silk for their particular design.
Additionally, Pongees has supported colleges through sponsorship to help further promote the creative use of silk.
